Science

We follow the EYFS Statutory Framework 2022 (Reception) and National Curriculum: Science programme of study (Years 1 - 6). We teach the curriculum through the Chris Quigley's Essentials Curriculum to ensure our pupils develop the skills needed to flourish as scientists. Children are taught the essential characteristics of scientists in order to help them 'think like a scientist'. Our curriculum shows a progression in skills, ensuring pupils can meet the milestones for each key stage before moving on to the next step in their learning. Threshold Concepts for Science underpin the skills taught to ensure children can develop a thorough knowledge of Science.

As we have mixed-age year groups, we follow a two year rolling programme for Science.

Essential characteristics of scientists

The ability to think independently and raise questions about working scientifically and the knowledge and skills that it brings.
Confidence and competence in the full range of practical skills, taking the initiative in, for example, planning and carrying out scientific investigations.
Excellent scientific knowledge and understanding which is demonstrated in written and verbal explanations, solving challenging problems and reporting scientific findings.
